Overactive kitten help !!!!?
I picked up a stray about 7-8 months ago. So im not sure exactly how old my cat is but I estimate about a year. Anyway he has been fixed which really didn’t calm him down at all. He is still just as active as when he was a baby. Im a medical school student so I assume my cat sleeps while im gone and when I come home he is ready to play. Even though when I return home everything and anything that I would happen to leave on a surface would be on the floor. Like all of my tennis stringing equipment, grocery bags, cereal boxes, cups, papers, etc. I usually study when im home so I don’t mind if he plays but he usually rests by my desk. This is where things cross the line. He gets into these hyperactive modes whenever I stand up and start doing things. Like cook, move to shower, etc. He sprints all over the place and jumps between my legs as I walk while biting me. Not biting "hard" . . . I can tell he is playing but it still hurts and often leaves me cut and sometimes even bleeding a tiny bit. I don’t know what to do because he isn’t afraid of anything which is why I named him batman (he bites like a bat and hes black with yellow eyes). He sits inside my bathtub as I shower and lets water splash over his face. IT doesn’t bother him one bit. I try to make loud hissing noises when he bites, or smack a roll of paper near him to startle him. And hes not afriad of water so that doesn’t help. Basically I just push him away with my leg or pick him up and throw him (gently toss him away lol).

Another thing that he has been doing is scratching a lot. He has a scratch mat which he does use. But he also scratches my cushioned char, my bed, my towels, my floor shower towels, my clothes as I dress, etc. I have pulled threads out of almost all my towels now and that really annoys me.

Lastly is the nighttime situation. He sleeps like a rock from 9/10ish to 12am. I can pick him up, throw him around, push him, bother him, etc. and he will still sleep. Unless I play with him for an hour which I dont have time to do. I do play with him though and he does love me (just too much apparently). Everynight when I jump in bed at midnight he wakes up and starts kneading on my back. Then he runs away and starts making commotion which really doesn’t stop all night. The only solution is to lock him in the laundry room and let him howl for hours (he doesn’t stop). Then I let him out around 5-6 AM and he will sleep / be calm as I leave. Basically he has the opposite schedule I do. I thought cats were supposed to sleep most of the day but my cat is awake basically all day. Part of the reason I didn’t get a dog even though I really wanted one.

Anyway maybe the reason he is scratching so much is because I haven’t trimmed his nails. Its hard when you live alone. I need to have someone else do it while I hold him or visa versa.

My parents have 2 burmese bred cats that were nothing like mine. They were much calmer and never acted so sporatically even when they were kittens. They always sleep.

Any tips because sometimes I feel like chucking Batman out the window.

Also im just joking about throwing him around / etc. I would never abuse an animal but I hope you can see my frustration. And I do love him. Its great having a companion when all I do is study all the time.

We had the sleeping problem with my mom’s cat. Her doctor told her to get half of a children’s chewable tylenol and feed it to the cat. You may want to check with your vet before doing that, but it calmed her cat down. As far as the scratching, there is spray you can buy that is supposed to detour animals from certain stuff, or you can use pepper. Hope this helps!

Whenever he does one of the things he shouldn’t… bites you, trips you, scratches the sofa, etc. Very firmly say "No _______!" whatever it was he was doing… then put him in the bathroom by himself and close the door for 10-20 minutes… the last thing he wants is to be separated from his human… he will quickly learn that the behaviors that are preceded by NO will get him exactly that and he’ll stop doing them.

As far as trimming his nails goes…. roll him up in a towel from the neck down (don’t roll his face in or you may accidentally smother him), then take out one paw at a time and clip the nails on that paw… when you’re, done give him a treat.

Batman is a normal kitten, who isn’t getting enough of your attention. I know that your’e in school, and it’s hard to spend time with him as well as get your stuff done. I’m at home with my girl all day and she demand loads of attention- i just try to make her part of that I’m doing at the time. Example- she loves sheet changing days. She’ll play with the sheets and duvet cover as long as I let her. She likes to catch dirty laundry while it’s being sorted into piles, so we play catch with that. She gets to "help" me do dishes (she gets splashed too and doesn’t care either) and put laundry on the hangers. He will calm down in time, just bear with him for now, and try to put things you’re worried about him getting into in places he can’t get to until he gets older and chills out a little bit. BTW, kittens don’t sleep all day, their kind of like young kids- play for 3 hours, pass out for 2. Play for 3 more, pass out for a couple again. And they like to wake up early- my girl had me up with a storm at 3:15, and then was ready to play and be up for the day at 6:30! It’s just part of having him. If you really get fed up with him, find a toy he can play with on his own (balls with the bells in them are really great for when you’re about to crack, because he can play for 30 minutes without even knowing you exist) and try to calm down. Other great toys to help wear out a hyper kitty are laser pointers- my girl LOVES hers!
